What are your options, and what does each cost?
You can pay for call answering four ways: self-serve AI software, a live answering service, a done-for-you AI employee, or your own hire. Here is the range for each as of October 2026, from the vendors' own pricing pages and federal wage data.
| Option | How it's billed | Typical listed range |
|---|---|---|
| Self-serve AI receptionist | Monthly plan by minutes, calls or unique callers | $49 to $500 a month |
| Live answering service | Monthly plan by minutes or calls, plus overage | $99 to several thousand dollars a month |
| Done-for-you AI employee (Arifwork) | Flexible monthly pricing, built around volume and roles | Quoted on a call |
| In-house receptionist | Wages plus benefits and overhead | About $55,000 a year full time |
The cheapest sticker price is rarely the cheapest per booked job. The sections below show how to compare them fairly. If you're still deciding whether you need one, start with what an AI receptionist is.
What do AI receptionist plans cost as of October 2026?
Self-serve AI receptionist plans list between $49 and $500 a month, but each vendor meters something different. Read the unit before you compare.
| Vendor and plan | Monthly price | What's included | Overage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rosie Professional / Scale / Growth | $49 / $149 / $299 | 250 / 1,000 / 2,000 minutes | Not stated on pricing page |
| Goodcall Starter / Growth / Scale | $79 / $129 / $299 | 100 / 500 / 2,000 unique customers | 79¢ / 26¢ / 15¢ per extra customer |
| My AI Front Desk Business-in-a-Box | $99 ($79 billed annually) | 200 voice minutes | About $0.25 per extra minute (25 credits) |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist Pro | From $150 | 75 calls at $2.00 each; $1.80 at 150 calls | $2.50 per extra call at the 75-call tier |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist Enterprise | From $500 | 300 calls at $1.67 each | $2.17 per extra call |
Prices are list prices viewed in October 2026 and change often. Self-serve means you do the setup: writing the knowledge base, connecting the calendar and testing.
What do live answering services cost?
Live answering services, where trained people answer your line, list from about $99 to $2,100 a month for small-business plans, which works out to roughly $5 to $15 per 3-minute call depending on the plan.
| Service and plan | Monthly price | Included | Overage |
|---|---|---|---|
| PATLive 50 / 200 / 500 minutes | $99 / $349 / $759 | 50 / 200 / 500 minutes | $2.29 / $1.99 / $1.79 per minute |
| Ruby 50 / 100 / 200 / 500 minutes | $250 / $395 / $720 / $1,725 | 50 / 100 / 200 / 500 minutes | Not listed on pricing page |
| Smith.ai human-first Starter / Basic / Pro | $300 / $810 / $2,100 | 30 / 90 / 300 calls | $11.50 / $10.50 / $8.50 per call |
Humans handle nuance well, but per-minute billing punishes long calls and high volume. For a side-by-side of the two models, see AI receptionist vs. answering service, or our comparisons of Arifwork vs. Ruby and Arifwork vs. Smith.ai.
What does an in-house receptionist cost?
A full-time receptionist at the national median wage costs about $55,000 a year once benefits are included. Here's the math.
- Wage: The BLS median for receptionists was $18.27 an hour, or $38,010 a year, in May 2025.
- Benefits: For private-industry office and administrative support workers, wages were 68.7% of total compensation in June 2026 and benefits were 31.3%, per the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation survey.
- Total: $38,010 ÷ 0.687 = about $55,330 a year, or roughly $4,610 a month.
That figure excludes recruiting, training, a desk, a phone line and the hours nobody covers. A full-time schedule covers about 40 of the 168 hours in a week, before vacations and sick days. The full comparison is in AI receptionist vs. hiring a receptionist.
How do you compare plans priced by minute, call or caller?
Convert everything to cost per handled call using your own volume. Example: say you get 150 calls a month that need answering, averaging 3 minutes each, which is 450 minutes. Using the list prices above:
| Option (illustrative) | Plan that fits | Monthly cost | Cost per call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rosie | Scale, 1,000 minutes | $149 | About $0.99 |
| Goodcall | Growth, 500 unique customers | $129 | About $0.86 |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | Pro, 150 calls at $1.80 | $270 | $1.80 |
| PATLive | 500 minutes | $759 | About $5.06 |
| Smith.ai human-first | Basic, 90 calls plus 60 at $10.50 | $1,440 | $9.60 |
| Ruby | 500 minutes | $1,725 | $11.50 |
| Full-time receptionist | Median wage plus benefits | About $4,610 | About $30.70 |
This is illustrative. Billing increments, overage rules and taxes vary, and a human receptionist does more than answer calls. The point is the order of magnitude: AI is cents to a couple of dollars per call, humans are several dollars to tens of dollars.
What costs aren't on the pricing page?
The monthly plan is only part of the bill. Budget for these too:
- Texting registration. Business texting from a 10-digit number requires A2P 10DLC registration. Twilio lists a $4.50 brand fee ($46 for a Standard brand with vetting), a $15 campaign vetting fee, and $1.50 to $10 a month per campaign.
- Per-text carrier fees. Twilio lists $0.0083 per outbound SMS segment plus carrier pass-through fees of $0.0035 (AT&T) to $0.005 (Verizon).
- Your setup time. Writing answers, booking rules and handoff rules, then testing. Self-serve tools leave this to you.
- Integrations. Connecting your calendar, CRM or field-service software.
- Overage. A busy season can push you past your plan.
- Missed handoffs. A cheap tool that drops a complaint or a ready-to-buy caller costs more than it saves.
How does Arifwork price its AI employees?
Arifwork's pricing is flexible and quoted on a call once we know which roles you need and how many calls and leads they will handle. We don't publish a rate card because volume and scope vary widely between a solo plumber and a three-location salon.
What the price covers is the work self-serve tools leave to you: we train the AI on your services, tone and booking rules, wire it into your phone line, business texting and calendar, handle your A2P 10DLC texting registration, and tune it live. Most businesses are running in about a week, though carrier texting approval can add a week or two. You can meet the three AI employees on the team page and see the steps on how it works.
How do you know if it pays for itself?
Compare the monthly cost to the revenue from calls you currently miss. If recovered jobs are worth more than the fee, it pays for itself.
Example: say a plan costs $300 a month and your average job is $350, close to Angi's reported national average for an HVAC repair. Recovering one extra job a month covers the cost. Recovering four a month returns about $1,400 against $300.
That's illustrative, not a promise. Run your own numbers in the missed-call revenue calculator and read how much missed calls cost for worked examples. When you're ready for a quote, book a demo.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI receptionists charge per minute or per call?
Both exist. As of October 2026, Rosie and My AI Front Desk meter minutes, Smith.ai's AI Receptionist meters calls, and Goodcall meters unique customers. Convert to cost per handled call before comparing.
Are there setup fees?
It depends on the vendor, so ask before signing. Self-serve tools usually charge little to start but leave setup to you. Arifwork covers pricing, including setup, on the quote call.
Why doesn't Arifwork publish its prices?
Because the roles a business needs and the volume they handle vary a lot. We quote flexible monthly pricing after a short call, built around your call and lead volume.
Is a cheap AI receptionist good enough?
For simple message-taking, often yes. If you need real booking into your calendar, texting, handoffs and compliance handled, test those specifically before choosing on price. If emergency calls matter, ask directly: Arifwork's Ava doesn't handle them differently yet.
What does texting add to the cost?
Registration fees of a few dollars to about $46 one time, a $15 campaign vetting fee, $1.50 to $10 a month per campaign, and roughly 1.2 to 1.4 cents per text segment including carrier fees, based on Twilio's October 2026 pricing.
